I always find choosing a hotel in Europe to be the most difficult part of my trip. If you are not on a tour and must choose your own accommodations start by making a checklist of the things that are important to you in a hotel. My checklist is as follows:
ü Close to points of interest that I want to visit (i.e. Acropolis and Acropolis Museum)
ü Restaurant in the hotel
ü Close to train or metro
ü Air-conditioning
ü Good reviews (i.e TripAdvisor, Travel Agent)
ü Staff will help arrange tours, information
ü Roof-top bar overlooking Acropolis (Athens) or other city monuments.
ü Free breakfast
My preference is always a hotel that is not an American chain such as Hilton or Marriott, but locally owned and run. In Athens, I chose Herodion Hotel because it met all the items on my checklist (www.herodion.gr.com)
The location was fabulous! It allows you to explore many of the important sites on foot. It is across the road from the Acropolis museum with a 5-minute walk to the entrance of the Acropolis and 8-minute walk to the Temple of Olympian Zeus. The Acropolis metro stop was less than a 5-minute walk from the hotel as well.
Each room had air conditioning and I was able to use it in May. Rooms also include modern amenities that I also look for such as an in-room electronic safe, in-room tea & coffee facilities, mini bar, direct dial phones, satellite T.V., Hair dryer, assortment of toiletries, bathrobes and slippers, complimentary WiFi internet access.
Food in the two restaurants in the Hotel was amazing. The free breakfast included Greek traditional breakfast items but also hot American breakfast food such as scrambled eggs and bacon.
The Atrium Greek Bistro, tucked at the back of the front lobby, is quiet and serene reflecting the same understated elegance as the rest of the hotel. The space surrounding the Bistro includes backgammon boards, books and comfy cushions and sitting areas.
Point A on the 4th floor includes a phenomenal view of the Acropolis along with food offering flavors of the Mediterranean with a twist.
The staff was very helpful and great you with a warm welcome. They can provide you with information on tours but also any information you may need on navigating the City of Athens. I would definitely stay here again on any future trip to the City!
