A Great Day Traveling Highway 1A from Boston

Boston, Massachusetts, makes a great starting point for a drive along Maine’s coast. Before hitting the road, spend a day or two discovering Boston’s historic sites; follow the Freedom Trail to learn more about the city’s significant role in the American War of Independence (which took place in the late 1700s). For modern-day Boston, spend some time perusing the shops along Newbury Street or indulging in the city’s exceptional cuisine-especially Lobster!

When you’re ready to hit the road, opt for the scenic route. Traveling north of Boston on U.S. Route 1 rather than Interstate 95 (you can come back I-95 in the evening). This route will take you through numerous charming New England towns right along the coast. Checking out on Google map the '1A' that should take around 3.5 hours. The ride up the coast of New Hampshire on 1A is immediately beside the open ocean. It's a gorgeous ride well worth your time. Suggested stops include:

Salem, MA

This is a historic coastal city and home to the House of Seven Gables. The City is also the location of the infamous Salem witch trials of 1692. There is a mix of important historical sites and a vibrant downtown that has more than 60 restaurants, cafes, and coffee shops.

Portsmouth, NH

Portsmouth is the great top on the New Hampshire Seacoast. Its downtown streets are reminiscent of a small English market village. Discover the John Paul Jones House, located at 43 Middle Street in Portsmouth, at the corner of Middle and State Streets. (Parking is easier on State Street.) The House is a pleasant walk from Market Square, the heart of historic Portsmouth. When you purchase a full admission ticket, ask for a “passport” entitling you to $1.00 off the admission price at all other Portsmouth Historic House Associate member sites. Please allow forty-five minutes to one hour for tours at each house.

Portland, ME

Portland, ME

Take Route 1, to Portland, Maine. This Maine’s largest urban area, Portland and thrives with a variety of things to do, from shopping and dining to hiking and biking. It is a great place to have dinner if you need to head back to Boston the same evening.
